After an Accident

What To Do in the Event of an Auto Accident

Move out of the way of traffic and turn on your hazard warning lights. If you are not able to move the vehicles, turn on your hazard lights and make sure that everyone involved moves to a safe location out of traffic until the police arrive.

Call the police, even in a minor accident. If someone is injured, request medical assistance. If a fire is involved, request fire department aid.

Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than the police or your agent.

Exchange necessary information with the other driver(s). Be sure to write down the following:

  1. Each driver's name
  2. The names of any passengers
  3. Their addresses
  4. Their home, work and/or cell phone numbers
  5. The license plate numbers of all vehicles involved
  6. The insurance information of all parties, regardless of fault
  7. Contact information of all witnesses.

Write down a brief description of how the accident occurred, including the following:

  1. Location of the accident
  2. Any traffic lights or signs
  3. Traffic lanes involved
  4. Point of impact on all vehicles involved in the accident
  5. Extent of damage to each vehicle
  6. Any reported injuries at the scene of the accident

Report the accident to us or directly to your insurance company as soon as possible. Look for the contact information under the How To File a Claim tab. The faster you report your claim, the sooner we can get you back on the road.

For your convenience, you can print a copy of the form. Carry a copy in the glove compartment of your vehicle with your insurance card. In the event of an accident, you will have this to collect the information.
